Hyejeon Jeon[email protected]
My name is Hyejeon Jeon. I am a educator and practicing artist who focuses on the interactions between art and technology, narrative sequential art, and contemporary drawing. I have also spent years creating independent comics, many of which I showed at comic events in South Korea. Having started my art practice by drawing on the back of my father’s art history doctoral thesis drafts, I remain very invested in subjects related to art history and mythology, mainly Korean. Currently, I am looking to work in animation production. |

More About Hyejeon Jeon
Born in Seoul, I grew up in outskirts of Ulsan, a city in southern region of South Korea. The neighborhood was yet to be swallowed by full urbanization and I spent my childhood walking around rice paddies and eating wildflowers. This was also when South Korea was going through some significant societal and economic changes. The country had just put behind decades of dictatorship and military rule when financial crisis crashed the economy in 1997. That was when I and other elementary school children learned the word “unemployment” and “bankrupt.”
In 2010, I flew to the US to study art and art history Rice University in Houston Texas. Here I had the opportunity to study Spanish language and had the incredible fortune to study in Madrid for a semester. I thank everyone who helped me during my journey as a student of Spanish language during this time: namely, Natalia my former landlady from Colombia and Vilma the university staff who assured me that I would surely make mucha plata after graduation, though I am still some steps away from that goal.
After graduating with BA in art and art history in 2014, I worked as a translator in Seoul while working on various independent art projects. One takeaway from the corporate laborer experience is that one must never use the colors of the said company’s rival company.
I returned to the US to pursue MFA in art at the Ohio State University in 2017. This is when I joined the cool bunch by learning to tinker with VR and 3D technology. Since then, I try to tell new narratives using whatever means I can use.
